laser printer vs. inkjet printer

In the last article in the Mac Mini or Apple TV debate we examined in detail the specifications of both devices and how they are similar to each other. Here we examine the differences between the two Apple products.

The main difference comes in two areas. The first Apple TV on the lack of processing power. Even cheaper Mac Mini has a much faster processor than the Apple TV device and this, coupled with only 256 MB of RAM on the Apple TV allows the Mini to display 1080p resolution from the maximum resolution of the Apple TV to 720p. In today's market more and more 1080p displays and media accompanying this drawback, we feel one is enough to remove the television us.

The second major difference is the Apple TV without a DVD player. We appreciate that the intention Apple TV to play content downloaded via iTunes and sites like YouTube, but the inability to simply put on a CD or DVD is an important issue.

In addition to these two major differences, there are other factors that also help to meet the Apple TV or Mac mini argument. One concerns the ability of the mini to play more video formats of the ATV. The mini can handle Divx, Xvid and MKV files straight out of the box and being essentially a computer, it can read many more formats, with a little tweaking. The Apple TV, the other is limited to video MP4. It would be possible to add compatibility with its PC-based architecture, but due to lack of power and memory on the offer in May Road not be a useful exercise.

The bulk free Mac mini has five USB ports for connecting external drives to increase capacity, create backups and connect external devices such as card readers and USB drives. The only USB port on the Apple TV is reserved for the service and diagnostic purposes.

Being mainly a computer, the Mac Mini also allows users greater freedom to add features in terms installing third-party programs and utilities. There are many online resources to help you with these functions. The mini also has the Safari web browser which allows you to browser the Internet on your TV. This type of functionality is only available on Apple TV with a third party hack.

There are of course some drawbacks that suffer from two units, especially compared to Windows or Ubuntu-based solutions. The first is the lack of space which prevents the installation of digital tuner cards that can turn a device into an all around media center solution. There are external USB2 tuners Digital might be added, but they lack the Apple TV's power would probably exclude that such a device upgrade. The mini would be good with such a solution.

Neither the products have a Blu-ray playing capabilities, which could be regarded as essential for some users. As for the question Turner map above, the mini could easily take a Blu-ray external via USB 2.0 port. Specifying the Apple TV is however unlikely to face playing a Blu-ray.

In terms of price, the ATV is much cheaper than the Mac mini, but as illustrated above, money extra gets you a specification much more.

As the winner of the Mac mini vs. Apple TV battle, so it must be the Hassle Free for Mac mini us. If cost is your main concern and you need an Apple product then you might consider the TV. A Mac mini is not that so expensive considering what you get for your money and you use it for much longer than the Apple TV never could. It is also much more flexible. You could having to put together a little more time, especially to make it more friendly for the whole family to use, but you'll be rewarded with a much better performance quality and a broader range of capabilities that the ATC does not provide.

In conclusion, a free Mac mini is the better proposition. Despite the Apple TV’s low price, you also get a low specification. In fact, the specification is so inadequate that it is rendered almost obsolete with regards to carrying out certain tasks. If all you want to do is download iTunes sourced software and watch YouTube clips then it will serve you well, but we suspect anyone getting into the world of home cinema Macs will want to achieve a lot more with their hardware than is possible with this device.
